Celebrate Hispanic Heritage

Month!

Books to Explore Hispanic Culture

By Elizabeth Hurtado-Lafont Springdale Public Library
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated in the United States from
September 15 to October 15. It is a special time when we learn the history, culture, and contributions of people from Hispanic and Latin communities. These communities come from places like Mexico,
Central and South America, the Caribbean and
Spain. It is a significant time for me too, because- if you remember- I’ m from the Dominican Republic, an island in the Caribbean. So, I feel honored that the whole nation has a time to celebrate my roots and origins! During this month, we learn about Hispanic traditions, food, music, and art, and we remember how this culture has helped make the world a better and more colorful place. One of the best ways to learn and appreciate this vibrant heritage is through books! Whether you’ re looking for stories about family, history, or traditions, here is a list of must-read books
that offer a fantastic gateway into Hispanic culture. Choose your favorite!
1.“ Islandborn” by Junot Díaz. Picture Book Ages: 5-8
Lola’ s teacher asks her class to draw pictures of the places they are from, but Lola can’ t remember her native country. With the help of her family and neighbors, she begins to piece together memories and learns about the rich history and culture of her homeland. This beautifully illustrated book captures the importance of community and heritage— and Lola’ s homeland is mine, too.
2.“ Carmela Full of Wishes” by Matt de la Peña. Picture Book Ages: 4-8
This heartfelt story follows Carmela, who is celebrating her birthday by making wishes on dandelions. As she walks through her neighborhood, the story highlights the everyday life of a young girl in a Hispanic community, emphasizing family, love and hope.
