Raising awareness and celebrating acceptance of people with autism is the purpose of Autism Awareness Month .

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others , communicate , learn , and behave . Although autism can be diagnosed at any age , it is described as a “ developmental disorder ” because symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life .

Although better understood today , children with autism spectrum disorder can face challenges inside and outside their families . Parents , relatives , teachers and friends with an understanding of autism spectrum conditions can help . Understanding leads to fuller relationships .

People affected by autism spectrum differences are not uncommon . Everyone will someday know , attend school with or work with persons who have this diagnosis . Every person with autism is unique in how they are affected . Learn how to be a good friend and to enjoy people of all different abilities .
