NECTIVORES

Some birds are specialists , meaning they have evolved to be picky eaters such as eating only nectar from bright flowers . Special features like long tongues help them reach the hard to access nectar . Hummingbirds are examples of nectivores !

OMNIVORES

Many birds are omnivorous , meaning they eat a variety of things ( insects , seeds , fruit , plants , etc .) and are opportunistic . Their diets may change with the seasons , environments , and lifecycles . Examples of common Omnivores that live in Arkansas include American Robins and Northern Cardinals .

CARNIVORES

Birds who are carnivores eat meat . These birds are equipped with features such as quality vison and hearing , quick reflexes , and sharp talons and beaks . Carnivores use these unique adaptations to locate , stalk , and capture their food . Examples of carnivores in Arkansas include Red-tailed Hawks , Great Blue Herons , and Bald Eagles .

Scavengers , such Turkey Vultures , primarily eat dead animals . Scavengers are important in cleaning up smelly wastes and removing pathogens ( things that make us sick ) and toxins from the environment .
