Kindness & Thankfulness:
Two Values That Fit Together
November is a special month because we get to celebrate World Kindness Day and Thanksgiving. At first, they may sound like two different celebrations, but when we think about them closely, we see that kindness and thankfulness go hand in hand.
One book that shows this perfectly is No More Chairs by Dan Gill. This story is based on something that really happened in Mr. Gill’ s classroom. He had a rule: there should always be one more chair for anyone who needed it. That way, no one would ever feel left out or unwelcome.
Think about that for a moment. If a new kid came into your class, would you pull up a chair for them? That’ s kindness! And if you were the new kid, wouldn’ t you feel thankful that someone cared enough to make space for you?
Here are some examples of how we can practice kindness and thankfulness every day, just like in the story:
• At school: If someone is sitting alone at lunch, you can invite them to your table. They’ ll feel included, and you’ ll be thankful for making a new friend.
• At home: Helping your parents with chores without being asked is an act of kindness. Saying“ thank you” when they cook dinner or help with homework shows gratitude.
• With friends: Sharing your toys or letting someone have the first turn is kindness. When your friends do the same for you, showing thankfulness makes them feel appreciated.
• In the community: Holding the door open for someone, writing a thank-you note to a teacher, or even smiling at a neighbor are small acts that spread kindness and gratitude.
Just like the chairs in Mr. Gill’ s classroom, kindness and thankfulness make more
room in our hearts. They help us create a world where everyone belongs and feels valued.
So this November, when you sit down for
Thanksgiving dinner or celebrate Kindness Day, remember: there is always space for one more chair, one more act of kindness, and one more word of thanks.
